0484 - "Bairro Metalúrgico" (just kidding)

As previously mentioned, this year has also been for metal. It turns out that we must be excavating an area with a stone structure related to copper metallurgy. As usual, the structure is coming into the section and we will have to widen it. But in this area there have been numerous remains of used crucibles (some are still in situ) and even more traces of copper remains. It is a structure that overlaps the Timber Circle infrastructure and dates back to the beaker occupation phase of this central area of Perdigões. Not far from the cremation depositions (perhaps 15 meters away), a spatial proximity emerges between two practices in which fire is a central character in processes of transformation (transubstantiation), which introduces another proximity beyond the spatial one. An idea that I have already underlined, and I will come back to do so shortly, seeking to overcome the watertight way in which "different" activities and practices in Prehistory are traditionally approached.

0483 - A perfeição do círculo / The perfection of the circle

This is what can be said about the Timber Circle of Perdigões, now that the Southeast quadrant is beginning to be exposed. A part that was feared to have been destroyed by the 1996 deep ploughing, but which was preserved (at a tangent). Good news then.

0482 - Cobre / Copper

The registration of the copper metallurgy category (ore, foundry remains, crucibles, artefacts) in the central area of Perdigões reached the round number of 500. Its distribution in the stratigraphic sequence that develops over the Timber Circle area is evident, concentrating in the deposits and structures associated with the Bell Beaker. The intense metallurgical activity in a place of strong symbolism, such as this center of Perdigões, speaks well of the transcendental character that this same activity would involve.

It had already been noticed in the last campaigns, but the results we are getting in this one seem to confirm that we have, not one, but two Timber Circles in the central area of Perdigões. Off-centered and with the second cutting the structures of the first. Another evidence of the complexity of the constructive and monumental sequence of this area of Perdigões.

The intentional fragmentation of ceramic vessels is recorded for most of the chronological life of the site. Whether in the careful segmentation into halves, or in its fragmentation through stones dropped on the containers. Examples of this last situation can be found from the Late Neolithic to the Chalcolithic with Bell Beakers. Some theoretical and interpretative considerations about these practices can be found in the publication "Fragmentation and Depositions in Pre and Proto-Historic Portugal", which can be downloaded here: http://www.nia-era.org/publicacoes/cat_view/18-monografias-livros

0476 - The sea of holes...and beakers... again

Arriving at the geological in the central area and the sea of post holes and ditches begin to appear. In the other intervention area, arrowheads and bell beakers prevail.

0475 - No centro / At the centre

In what will be the center of the Timber Circle, something is appearing: For now, a wall of a short corridor excavated in the bedrock that leads to what appears to be a negative structure enclosed by stones and clay. Does this means... ?

They are occurring at an interesting rate and mostly in deposits at the top of the stratigraphic sequence in the central area of Perdigões.

0471 - O costume / The usual

We dig in the morning and in the afternoon we deal with the material. It has to be, because it's always a lot. In three days, and only regarding ceramics, 2678 fragments were collected (in an area of about 30m2), weighing a little more than 55Kg. To which are added 59 fragments of loom weights, a varied lithic industry (especially arrowheads), fragments of a stone vase (marble?) and an "ídolo de cornos". We are in the later contexts of Perdigões. And if there was a lot changes at this stage, the amount of material is certainly not one of them.

The final phase of the Perdigões, at the beginning of the Bronze Age (last two centuries of the 3rd millennium BC) is being characterized by the presence of several contexts in which phenomena of closure by petrification are observed. Whether in ditches, at the top of occupation sequences or, as in this case, at the end of a pit where faunal remains were deposited, possibly resulting from commensality situations in the context of ritualized practices. This specific context is published in a volume dedicated to depositions and fragmentation practices in Prehistory (which brings together presentations from a workshop held by ERA with the supporter of the AAP, which can be obtained here: http://www.nia-era .org/publicacoes/doc_download/125-fragmentation-and-depositions-in-pre-and-proto-historic-portugal

In this year's campaign, we will be working on a situation that is part of this same end-of-life dynamic of the Perdigões.

0468 - Perdigões em Números / Perdigões in Numbers

We concluded the counting of ceramic fragments collected in the 2019 and 2020 campaigns in the central area of Perdigões (marked by the blue rectangles in the image). In total covered area is about 74m2 with an average depth of 0.5m (which gives about 37m3).

The ceramic fragments collected, only in this area and in these two campaigns, total 57.724, with a weight of 858 Kg. (almost a ton). The density per half cubic meter is 780 fragments. An absolutely brutal density (and we are only talking about ceramic fragments, because the faunal remains are not far behind).

All this gives a small idea of the intensity of occupation of this space, between the construction of the timber circle and the stone cairn that partially covers it.

At the beginning of the new campaign, for four days we have been expanding the excavated area in the centre of Perdigões. Much material has already been collected, but, more importantly, the southern and eastern limits of the large central spot corresponding to the stone cairn that culminates the occupation at this point of the site were defined. You can see it, even without being clean.

0466 - Holding... at Perdigões

One of the large blades of more than eight dozens from Tomb 3. Possibly in "chert", with the green colour possibly due to chlorite or bivalent iron. Which may point to the Pyrite Belt.

0465 - Holding.. at Perdigões 20.

This bell beaker fragment is absolutely exceptional. It has a typical Ciempozuelos style decoration, but with a naturalist style: it represents aligned plants, with pods and internal fruits and tops with fruits. The horizontal lines thus look like furrows in a cultivated field. The band next to the edge repeats the motifs, with slight changes. Its importance lies in the fact that it provides a rare window on the possible meanings of some decorative motifs of the incised campaniform, since also in Perdigões, the same organization appears represented in a more stylized way, and whose elements are common in the Ciempozuelos Campaniforme. This situation was analyzed and published here.

0458 - Holding... at Perdigões (13)

Flint crest blade from Perdigões. Being a crest blade means that it was one of the first to be extracted after preparing the core for the extraction process, maintaining the marks of that preparation: a series of knaps on one side and on the other that give it that crest aspect. It was collected at Tomb 3 of Perdigões, in a deposit with more than eight tens large blades. Here in the hands of BC Basilio. It is an imported object, just like its companions.

, a haste claro). Imagem de 2016.

Taking advantage of the double meaning of the term Hold in English, which means to wait and grasp, we take advantage of this space, while waiting for the next campaign in Perdigões, to pass images of hands and people holding objects collected over several campaigns. A photographic practice that we have been maintaining since the beginning.

We start with André Texugo and the large deer antler from Tomb 2 (third quarter of the 3rd millennium BC, the antler of course). Image from 2016.

0445 - Uma primeira proposta / a first proposal

Within the scope of the report that is currently being written, a first interpretative proposal for the main (but not all) lines of palisades and alignments of trunks / posts has already been carried out, based on the characteristics evidenced by the different negative structures of the central timber circle of Perdigões (although some options could be slightly diffrent). There are several specificities that support this first proposal, to be discussed elsewhere though. Naturally, many may be changed or adjusted when more area is exposed. It is worth underlining the circumstance of a ditch without posts inside a palisade ditch. A local evocation of the concept expressed by many "Henge" monuments (internal ditch, external bank)?

The design of the post hole profiles is making it possible to detect regularities in sizes and morphologies (and their alternation) that will help in the interpretation of the plans of the two timber circles and in the proposals for reconstruction that will be advanced.

0343 - As visitas e a equipa /the visits and the team

Hoje recebemos a visita de José Roquette, proprietário de grande parte dos Perdigões e grande entusiasta do sítio e do trabalho ali desenvolvido, acompanhado por alguns familiares.

Today we received the visit of José Roquette, owner of a large part of Perdigões and a great enthusiast of the site and the work developed there, accompanied by some family members.

And this is the "big" team that ends its hard work tomorrow, when the aerial survey with drone of the exposed part of the timber circles will be done.

This is the pit 92 deposition set: four recipients, a shale cover, a Pecten maximus and two ivory buttons with "V" perforation. 1/3 of another container (in remounting), which served as the basis for the deposition of coals, and two halves of (one?) burned pig mandible (one of them inside one of the vessels) are missing.

0340 - Contar / Counting

Here is a first image of the new Timber Circle (green lines) that overlaps, on the east side, the previous one (dashed lines in blue). It consists of a small trench with a circular tendency, which can be associated with a small ledge in the geological (dashed) and a sequence of post holes from the outside with regular spacing, diameter and depth (as evidenced by the posts placed in them).

On the west side, the larger Timber Circle is also cut by a structure. We have half of it, even with an entrance. The other half is below deposits and the stone structure of the early Bronze Age (as does the rest of the Timber Circle). Assuming in mirror the other half of this structure (dashed), it will present a generally ellipsoidal plan. Therefore, the identified entrance is generically oriented towards the summer solstice, seeing through the entrance on the horizon the pole that was placed to mark the NE entrance (Door 1) and the place where the Sun rises on the 21st of June for whom it is in the center of Perdigões (as already witnessed and documented).
